Many of our members are also members among SAR/Fire and EMS services. In addition we have MD's and licensed medical personnel who interact with family in both a support and a medical history role.
Other members are in support and maintenance functions. Specialists in fields of aviation, engineering, computer analysis and photographic issues help us offer a unique service here in Maine.
BOARD OF DIRECTORS RICHARD BOWIE MS: Mr. Bowie was born in portland maine, and is currently the Director of Operations for DEEMI. Prior to DEEMI, the Medical College of Virginia Emergency Medical Services employed him, where he served as acting director and neonatal supervisor of their service. Richard was instrumental in developing the Service from a single unit to over 14 ambulances, a helicopter and available Lear jet and King air services. Richard pursued undergraduate concentrations in psychology and science and holds a Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience. He has continued to pursue a doctorate in biomedical engineering. Richard began work in emergency medical services as a volunteer in 1979. ROBERT BOWIE, MD, MS:
DANIEL FINCK Medic/FF/BSN: Mr. Finck is a former firefighter/EMT from Norfolk, Virginia, who came to the Medical College of Virginia in 1985. While at MCV, Danny participated in advanced transport services and air flights. He served as a paramedic with Virginia’s Lifeflight. Currently he works as a Nurse in an ICU at MCV. Following his undergraduate degree, he pursued a Master of Arts in English and has begun then a degree in nursing, as a firefighter and EMT; Danny offers DEEMI’s Board real-world insight to problems faced by EMS personnel. MARTIN LENHARDT, PhD: Dr. Lenhardt is a professor of biomedical engineering at the Medical College of Virginia. To date, he has published over 100 peer reviewed scientific research papers and has raised millions of dollars in support of his research interests. Marty has led the research efforts of DEEMI and through NATO, has published research on helicopter acoustical studies. He has 14 children and an extremely patient wife. PHILLIP WEBB: Phil led the team that is now the DEEMI Board of Directors through the creation process of the Medical College of Virginia’s EMS system. His military service with Special Forces in Vietnam and Laos qualified him to act as MCV EMS Commander in Chief. During his wartime career, he was wounded in action against regular NVA troops and received the Silver Star for his efforts. Following Vietnam, he trained as a pump perfusionist and worked with Dr. Hume on the second heart transplant ever performed. Later, he was the Director of MCV hospitals with over 120 direct reports. Phil’s rules are the honor code of the DEEMI organization. FABIO CRICHIGNO Esq.: Fabio received his political science degree and earned a law degree from the Villanova School of Law in 1992. He joined DEEMI following graduation and has been involved in search and rescue and EMS for the past 10 years. Fabio provides legal and administrative support to the DEEMI organization.
ADMINISTRATION DIRECTOR, RICHARD BOWIE (LISTED ABOVE) MEDICAL DIRECTOR, ROBERT BOWIE M.D. (LISTED ABOVE) ASSISTANT DIRECTOR, THOMAS DEAN: Tom is a retired police officer and private investigator that currently works for the Department of Homeland Security as an armed security officer. He has been dedicated to the first responder role most of his life. He served 19 years on the New Brunswick, NJ police force; six years as a Navy Petty Officer in charge of submarine communications and navy scuba driver/rescue swimmer; and five years as an active member of the Pennsylvania Civil Air Patrol with time served on their statewide search and rescue team. Tom founded a successful burglar and fire alarm systems consultancy business in New Jersey, and after 20 years, sold Dean Security Systems, Inc. to retire to Maine as DEEMI’s Assistant Director. He is responsible for public affairs, security and is a qualified crew chief.
MEMBERS AT LARGE DONALD HARTLEY BUXTON
“Don” is one of our active-duty UK members. He lives in Rotherham, near Sheffield, Yorkshire, in the north of England. His full-time job in the UK National Health Service (NHS) is as a Patient/Public Involvement Manager, and prior to that he served with South Yorkshire Ambulance Service in a number of roles – as an Outpatient Booking Clerk, he then qualified as an AMPDS Emergency Medical Despatcher, and later won a secondment as an Emergency Life Support trainer working across South Yorkshire teaching the population to recognise the signs of a potential heart attack and how and when to perform CPR. In four years Don helped to teach these skills to over 15,000 citizens, some of whom went on to successfully use their skills in life-threatening incidents.
IN MEMORY OF TIM APPLE
Mr. Apple was the Director of Operations of Forrest Ambulance Service of Virginia. Prior to this, he was a leading team member in the creation of an ambulance service that culminated in aircraft-based, neonatal, pediatric and adult ICU services at the Medical College of Virginia. Concurrently, Tim pursued areas of concentration in hospital administration and public health. He began his health care career in EMS in 1973. Tim is our resident statistician and planning expert. |
